One flight. One instructor. The controls are yours.
A Discovery Flight at Vortex Flight School is your first flying lesson, flown from KLKU in Louisa, Virginia. You sit in the left seat and fly the aeroplane yourself, with a Certified Flight Instructor on a second set of controls beside you the entire time. It costs $265, your instructor can log the time as dual instruction toward a certificate, and there is nothing to commit to afterwards.

Everyone’s nervous.
The first-timer in the parking lot right now is nervous. The airline captain was nervous on her first lesson too.
Your instructor’s hands are on the controls with yours — they never leave.
Nervous means you’re paying attention. Good. Pilots pay attention.
On a screen it’s a scroll.
In the left seat it’s a throttle.
- Hold short Your instructor runs the checklist out loud. Nothing is skipped.
- Throttle Throttle forward — the runway blurs.
- 55 knots Around 55 knots, you pull back. Gently. That’s all it takes.
- Liftoff The ground lets go of you.
- 500 feet Most people are grinning before 500 feet. You’ll see.
The left seat is the pilot’s seat. It’s yours.
The pre-takeoff checklist.
Every item self-checks. There is nothing to prepare and nothing to prove.

Your Discovery Flight, step by step
-
Before you fly
You meet your instructor, talk through where you want to go with flying, and walk the aeroplane together on the pre-flight inspection. They explain what is being checked and why — no part of this is a mystery you are expected to sit through.
-
In the air
You take the controls. Climbs, turns, level flight, and a look at Lake Anna and the Central Virginia countryside from a few thousand feet. Your instructor is on a second set of controls the whole time and takes over the moment you want them to — most people find they want them to far less than they expected.
-
Back on the ramp
We shut down, and your instructor debriefs the flight with you: what you did well, what would come next, and roughly what the path to a certificate looks like from here. The time goes in a logbook if you want one. Then you go home and think about it — nobody chases you across the car park.

A real introduction — not a joyride
A Discovery Flight is designed to help you experience the aircraft, the instructor, and the training environment before committing to a larger plan. If you decide flying is for you, it's also how you judge us — the airplane, the instructor, and whether our approach fits how you want to learn.
